John Carr, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to Clark County, Ind. in 1808. Carr entered politics at the county level in 1824, and went on to serve in the Indiana House and U.S. Senate. Davis was born in Clark County, Indiana, near present-day Memphis, Indiana. He was born to William Davis, Jr. (1800–1879) and Mary Drummond-Davis (1801–1881), the oldest of their eight children. His father was a farmer. His parents came from Kentucky, and like many of the time including President Abraham Lincoln's family, moved to Indiana. Brothers Thomas and Joseph Carr were residents of Clark County, Ind. Joseph married Nancy Drummond in 1818; they had 12 children.
